Thanksgiving Poem

by Cara

I freaking love Thanksgiving, don’t you?
Turkey, ham, dressing, and yams too?
Granny’s good dishes, the pattern, autumn leaf.
Set proudly on the dinner table for all to see.
The cousins all decide to go for a walk.
We tell the elders, to “catch up and talk”
A couple of doors down Cousin Eddie comes in clutch,
Pulls out a big, fat, perfectly rolled Dutch.
As the blocks pass by, our laughs grow harder.
And before you know it, we’re back where we started.
Pass around the Listerine and body spray.
Because if Aunt Karen smells it, who knows what she’d say?
We come through the backdoor into a stoner’s paradise.
Mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and HOW MANY pies?
Granny shoos you out to get seated for the blessing.
God is great, God is god, can you pass the dressing?
Look around the table and see the faces that built me.
And remember all I have to be grateful for, especially Eddie.

Rest In Peace Cousin Chris
Thanksgiving walks won’t be the same without you.
